Update Brings Fans news of Troubling SWTOR Trend.

With the latest Game Update (1.1) Bioware has brought in a wide variety of changes and upgrades for Star Wars The Old Republic, which has left some fans recoiling In horror, as they recall past MMO trials by fire of a similar variety.

.
We are of course, talking about Star Wars Galaxies, and the swathe of updates which completely changed (in the players’ opinion for the worse) the way the game functioned on a fundamental level.
Although Bioware is far from implementing a Combat Upgrade for SWTOR, the precursors for an Upgrade, or New Game Enhancements as we saw in SWG are already in the works. With the latest update came a host of small changes, which have (although not entirely obviously) changed the state of player combat forever. This can be done by even the smallest changes, which may not be noticed in short fights. However, as time goes bye players will soon come to see the far reaching Implications of small upgrades and downgrades here and there, and begin pushing for different changes to be made.

.
Now remember, this is exactly how most games in the past have floundered. After the fact, players are universally disgusted by major game changing updates, but before the fact records show that a vast majority were in fact wishing for something of the sort. Everyone has some form of allegiance to their play style, so when they feel hard done by there is no shortage of letters to developers and forum moderators asking for changes that will return them to dominance.

.
As we see this beginning with a vengeance on the SWTOR official forums, many are hoping that other calming voices will be able to keep the team behind Star Wars The Old Republic level headed, so there is no chance of future game updates getting out of hand.

SWG players were less than impressed with their updates.

Strong Pre-Order numbers for SWTOR

In an annual report released yesterday by Bioware, among the pages of budgeting and productivity reports, discerning fans of Star Wars The Old Republic saw that the game, still months from release has already broken 36 thousand subscribers.

In a somewhat surprising move it seems the developers of the game have neglected to mention this on their website, even though it seems like a very impressive statistic. However, this may be just a temporary business decision, as they may wait until the number reaches another substantial milestone, such as 50 thousand.

With the date for release officially ‘set in stone’ for the 20th of December, it is somewhat surprising that so many players would be interested in securing the game so far ahead of time. Previous games, even ones as large as World of Warcraft, did not have nearly this many subscribers such a distance before they would actually enter the game.

It is probably no coincidence that the release date has been scheduled for the 20th, four days after the planned shut down of the previous Star Wars MMORPG, Star Wars Galaxies. Perhaps Lucasarts’ juggling of these dates is why it took so long to have a confirmed release for SWTOR, as they want to transfer as many players as possible straight from one to the other.

Since the announcement of SWTOR there has been almost continual speculation as to how the two games will coexist, which has thankfully been put to rest with the conclusion of one chapter in the Star Wars game-saga, and the opening of another. Lets just hope the strong subscriber numbers will reflect the strength of Star Wars The Old Republic when it is released, or we may find a lot of players wishing to move back to their previous game, which will no longer be there.

Prospective Players of SWTOR

One thing that will make or break anyone’s experience in SWTOR will be the players in the galaxy with them.

Pretty much since the beginning of online gaming many stigma have been attached to Gamers, which have been both bad and good. One thing the developers at bioware will have to do is to ensure these good traits, and try to minimise the number of players in the game world that embody the bad.

Now, to make an entertaining game for the widest number of people, there will always need to be the class clowns. A few trolls here and there never hurt anyone, and generally they pay more than their fair share of bills and make the game competitive for all.

One thing that is needed in no game world, or any world for that matter, is carebears. Cearbears and Roleplayers.
Since the beginning of MMO gaming such players have been the bane of your everyday player, as they have strived to prevent such players from enjoying the game in the ways they like to.
It is players like these that Star Wars Galaxies fans have to thank for riveting new game-play updates, such as the Combat Upgrade, and the following new game enhancements.

With constant wines of ‘this game is too hard’ or ‘people are better than me’ we see in any game, the developers starting to take notice. Once they have seen such thoughts vocalised, these are often the ideas they latch on to, as they are generally the most easy to implement and, from their perspective of a vocal minority in the community, quite popular among the players.

We can only hope that Roleplaying and excessive Care-bearing will be cracked down on in Star Wars The Old Republic. Hard.

Without such moderation rivers of tears threaten to well up on the forums, blogs, and even in game, and change the game in many ways which will certainly not be for the best.

What can players do about this you may ask? There is only one known antidote to players such as these and that is formidable trolling, which brings us nicely back to the beginning of this article. Get your blasters ready trolls, there are Roleplayers to be farmed!

We took the liberty of finding your first target, watch out for carebears such as this:
